Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) is a premier science laboratory of VSSC, carrying out basic and applied research on the lower and upper atmospheres, ionospheres and magnetospheres of the Earth and other solar system bodies (planets, planetary satellites and comets), using a suite of state-of-the-art experiments; ground-based, aboard ships and aircrafts, balloon and rocket -borne, and satellite payloads. The major disciplines are Aerosols and Climate Forcing; Boundary layer processes; Numerical modelling; Trace gases and atmospheric chemistry, microwave propagation and remote sensing of Earth’s surface and atmosphere; Dynamics and Energetics of the middle atmosphere; Convection and Clouds, Processes and coupling in the Mesosphere – lower Thermosphere – ionosphere with links to magnetosphere, equatorial aeronomy, investigations of the ionosphere and magnetosphere, experimental explorations of Moon and exosphere of Mars, investigation of processes in the Sun, solar wind-planet interactions, and modelling and observation of planetary and cometary emissions. SPL offers motivated students and scientist, excellent opportunities for performing research in the above frontline disciplines under different schemes.
Research Fellow Programme (Doctoral Fellowship)
SPL has a very vibrant research fellow’s programme with about 35 doctoral students at any time who would be working under the supervision of senior and experienced scientists. Every year, SPL recruits about 6 Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) through written test and interviews conducted at VSSC around June-August time period. Online applications for JRFs are sought through advertisements in national dailies around March-April.
These positions are meant for candidates having M. Sc. in Physics / Applied Physics / Space Physics / Meteorology / Atmospheric Sciences or any other allied field or with M.Sc Physics with specialisation in any one of the above subjects including electronics, or M.Tech in Atmospheric / Space / Planetary Sciences / Applied Physics or allied fields. Selected students should first undergo coursework, and subsequently work under the supervision of a senior faculty of the SPL. All the students selected for research receive fellowship, which is extendable up to a maximum of 5 years. The fellowship is extended each year after the student passes the review conducted by Academic Committee of the SPL and the external review conducted by VSSC.
Research Associates (Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship)
The Research Fellows of SPL, after submitting their PhD thesis may be given PDF position, based on an interview conducted by a Centre level committee, constituted for that purpose. The candidate has to submit an application along with a research proposal and thesis submission certificate. This PDF is normally for a period of 2 years, extendable by one more year in exceptional cases.
The other type of PDF is for external PhD holders. Application for this PDF can be made at any time of the year by submitting a research proposal along with a CV and publication list to the Director SPL. Selection is made based on the merit of the proposal as evaluated by peer-review process and an interview conducted by the Centre-level committee for this purpose. Number of PDF positions at any time for this category is limited to five. Any enquiry for these positions can be directed to the Director SPL.
Visiting Scientists (VS)
SPL also has a visiting scientist (VS) programme, which either operates through ADCOS VS programme, or directly by SPL, where the same guidelines as that of ADCOS RFS (ADREF) are followed. These positions are for senior scientists who have sufficient experience and those who hold a permanent position elsewhere. Applications can be made any time of the year to the Director SPL. Any enquiry for these positions can be directed to the Director SPL.
